Portland Update, June 2017

June 28, 2017

"A year ago I was writing about how Trump was a “trickster character”, musing philosophically about his appeal to the masses. I had no real fear that he would become our next president. A year later I am dazed and still in shock and writing short prose poems about reality TV, because it truly is the end of the world."

Portland Update, April 2017

April 28, 2017

"It’s supernatural, it’s mythical. It boggles the mind. It’s magic. It’s also patriarchy and it’s also power.  And that’s the way power operates. When people are able to get away with awful behavior and keep their power, it often leads to a reification of their power. Over and over."

Portland Update, March 2017

March 31, 2017

"Many people will say that we thought that nature was boundless, that the sea would forever give. That’s just not true. I have spoken with old time loggers and I’ve read accounts of men on sealing and whaling boats from the 18th century. Many wept, many had deep misgivings about what they were doing. Many knew they were cutting down trees, the likes of which, would never be seen again in Oregon or anywhere on the planet.

Portland Update, January 2017

January 16, 2017

Finally I got up and started packing up my belongings. That’s when the room went dark. I realized I was about to faint, so I dropped to the ground. My heart began to pound and my hands were shaking. I didn’t know what the hell was happening to me.

From my publisher:

"In her new memoir, Martha Grover goes undercover. Whether cleaning houses or looking for love, she peels back the surfaces of ordinary moments and reveals a life both hilarious and traumatic. The End of My Career sees Grover living with her parents again as she enters her late thirties, reconciling the pleasures and perils of being female, chronically ill, and subsisting on menial labor at the edge of an increasingly unaffordable city. Desperate for stable work, she gets hired as a state-sanctioned private investigator looking into shady workers’ comp claims—even while she herself fights in court for her own disability settlement. Angry and heartbroken, brimming with the outrageous contradictions of the modern world, The End of My Career embodies the comic nightmare of our times."
