Dear Mayor Wheeler - Somnambulist #31

6.00

This issue is comprised of letters my mother Frani Grover wrote to Portland Mayor Tom Wheeler.  Of the seventeen letters she sent the mayor, all but one went unanswered. This is the reason we decided to compile them all into a zine. Besides distributing them to my subscribers, zine distros, and bookstores, I hope to spread them far and wide in the city of Portland.

As some of you may know, my mother is an advocate for people living outdoors in East County. Every week, my mom Frani brings hot food and bags of groceries to homeless folks living near the Columbia River. Some folks have been living outside for years, others are only temporarily homeless. Because of her work with her homeless friends, my mom is very familiar with all of the issues they face - how they ended up on the streets, the challenges they face, and the obstacles to getting housing.

Mayor Tom Wheeler ran for office promising to help solve Portland's housing problem. But as anyone who lives here knows, the problem has only gotten worse.

My mom's letters inspire and humble me. Primarily, Frani tries to humanize the homeless - because many "solutions" by the city, government and ODOT, (especially homeless sweeps and the destruction and obstruction facing solutions like the Village of Hope) do nothing except make homeless people's lives worse.

It is not an exaggeration to say that sweeps by the police and ODOT have killed people or led to their deaths.

TEN PERCENT of every sale goes to my mom's charity - East County Aid and Comfort
